چکیده
ABSTRACT Pericytes are mural cells of the microvasculature, recognized by their thin processes and protruding cell body. wrap around endothelial play a central role in regulating various functions, including angiogenesis inflammation. They also serve as vascular support regulate blood flow contraction. Prior reviews have examined pericyte biological functions biochemical signaling pathways. In this Review, we focus on mechanics mechanobiology function. After an overview morphology structure pericytes, describe interactions with both basement membrane cells. We then turn our attention to biophysical considerations, contractile forces generated mechanical exerted responses these forces. Finally, discuss 2D 3D engineered vitro models for studying mechano-responsiveness underscore need more evolved that provide improved understanding function dysfunction.

متن کاملMechanobiology and the microcirculation: cellular, nuclear and fluid mechanics.
Endothelial cells are stimulated by shear stress throughout the vasculature and respond with changes in gene expression and by morphological reorganization. Mechanical sensors of the cell are varied and include cell surface sensors that activate intracellular chemical signaling pathways. Here, possible mechanical sensors of the cell including reorganization of the cytoskeleton and the nucleus a...
متن کاملGrowth plate mechanics and mechanobiology. A survey of present understanding.
The longitudinal growth of long bones occurs in growth plates where chondrocytes synthesize cartilage that is subsequently ossified. Altered growth and subsequent deformity resulting from abnormal mechanical loading is often referred to as mechanical modulation of bone growth. This phenomenon has key implications in the progression of infant and juvenile musculoskeletal deformities, such as ado...
متن کاملComputational modeling of single‐cell mechanics and cytoskeletal mechanobiology
Cellular cytoskeletal mechanics plays a major role in many aspects of human health from organ development to wound healing, tissue homeostasis and cancer metastasis. We summarize the state-of-the-art techniques for mathematically modeling cellular stiffness and mechanics and the cytoskeletal components and factors that regulate them. We highlight key experiments that have assisted model paramet...
متن کاملBioengineering and mechanobiology: pushing (and pulling) the limits of cellular mechanics
The Minisymposium on Bioengineering and Mechanobiology focused on engineering approaches to investigate the mechanical signaling of cells and tissues and was cochaired The program moved thematically from the mechanics of the nucleus to those of the cell cortex and finally to the mechanical behaviors of tissues. Jan Lammerding (Cornell University) described work probing the role of the nuclear e...
